In June 2007 19 Prosthetics and Orthotics students from Strathclyde University
participated in an educational field trip to Vietnam to gain an insight into the prosthetic and orthotic practices within a developing country. Vietnam has a large amputee
population for a number of reasons, motorcycle accidents, poor Health and Safety legislation and the Vietnam war which occurred between 1959 and 1975. Unfortunately the effects of
the war were not limited to landmine victims and war veterans but include congenital abnormalities caused by toxic chemicals used to clear the heavy foliage during the War. As
future healthcare professionals it was an invaluable learning experience for everyone who participated. PORT-ER supported the students in their fund raising activities for this trip.
